1. Atlantisia Rogersi

Nằm đầu tiên trong top những loài chim không biết bay, Atlantisia Rogersi là một loài chim họ gà sống trên quần đảo Tristan da Cunha, hoàn toàn không biết bay. Theo nhà khoa học Henry Martyn Rogers, người được đặt tên cho loài này, đã quan sát và ghi lại rằng:

“Loài chim thú vị nhất trong tất cả loài gà trống đảo mà tôi đã may mắn được biết đến. Tôi nghĩ đó là một loài chim nhỏ thuộc họ gà, không có cánh, không thể bay, nhưng có thể chạy bằng tốc độ lớn, trú ẩn trong bụi rậm và sống trong hang. Nó không di cư và thức ăn chính của nó ăn côn trùng và giun. Bán kính của nó từng sinh sống  mở rộng đến Tristan”.

Loài chim này thường được an toàn trước những kẻ săn mồi trên đảo ngoại trừ loài chim hét Tristan..

2. Phalacrocorax Harrisi (Chim cốc không biết bay)

Đây là loài chim cốc duy nhất sống ở Galapagos và được tìm thấy trên hai hòn đảo Fernandina và Isabela, sinh sản gần vùng nước lạnh nhất và làm tổ trên đá cuội hoặc nham thạch. Chim cốc không biết bay là thành viên lớn nhất trong họ chim cốc và là loài duy nhất không thể bay. Nó trông tương tự như những con chim cốc khác ngoại trừ đôi cánh của nó có kích thước bằng một phần ba kích thước cần thiết để bay so với cơ thể của nó. Phần sống lưng trên xương ức nơi gắn các cơ lớn cần thiết cho việc bay cũng giảm đi đáng kể.

Với số lượng ước tính chỉ khoảng 1.500 cá thể, chim cốc không biết bay là một trong những loài chim hiếm nhất thế giới.  Số lượng của loài chim này cũng thay đổi đáng kể do tác động của sự thay đổi môi trường như El Niño hoặc núi lửa phun trào. Con cái có thể sinh sản tới 3 lần một năm nên việc phục hồi sau thảm họa môi trường có thể khá nhanh chóng. Khi trên biển, chúng có nguy cơ bị cá mập tấn công. Trong khi ở trên cạn, chúng có nguy cơ bị cú và diều hâu và những kẻ săn mồi du nhập như mèo và chó ăn thịt… Đánh bắt bằng lưới cũng là một mối đe dọa đối với những loài chim này và các nỗ lực bảo tồn khuyến nghị ngăn chặn việc đánh bắt bằng lưới xung quanh phạm vi kiếm ăn của loài chim này.

3. Weka

Weka là một loài chim lớn, không biết bay màu nâu, là loài đặc trưng của vùng New Zealand. Hiện tại bốn phân loài của Weka được công nhận; Weka Đảo Bắc, Weka phương Tây, Weka Buff và Weka Đảo Stewart. Năm 1835, William Yate, một trong những nhà truyền giáo đầu tiên của New Zealand đã mô tả Weka của North Island là:

“Một con chim Weka  được gọi như vậy vì bộ ngực to và tròn trịa, có kích thước bằng con quạ, và nổi bật với màu đỏ đậm của những chiếc lông nhuốm màu trên lưng và dưới cánh. Chân của nó dài khoảng 5 inch và khá mảnh mai so với kích thước cơ thể. Mắt màu nâu nhạt, có vòng trắng bao quanh”.

Những con chim này thường được tìm thấy ở ven suối, và trên đất cằn cỗi, giữa đám dương xỉ còi cọc. Chúng cũng nổi tiếng là ăn cắp mùa màng, thức ăn, vật nhỏ.

Chim Weka có nhiều lợi ích. Chúng đã được sử dụng làm nguồn thực phẩm, nước hoa, lông vũ cho quần áo và dầu để điều trị viêm nhiễm.

4. Kakapo

Một loài chim đặc hữu khác của New Zealand, Kakapo, còn được gọi là vẹt cú, là một loài vẹt lớn, không biết bay, sống về đêm, sống trên mặt đất. Chúng dài từ 23 đến 25 inch và nặng từ 2 đến 9 pound. Mặc dù chúng là loài chim không thể bay nhưng Kakapos lại rất giỏi leo cây. Đôi khi, chúng cũng sẽ sử dụng đôi cánh của mình để lướt đi trong khoảng cách ngắn sau khi nhảy từ độ cao lớn. Bộ lông của chúng có màu vàng lục, chúng có mỏ và bàn chân lớn.

5. Đà điểu

Đà Điểu là động vật đẻ trứng. Mặc dù không thể bay nhưng đà điểu là loài chạy nhanh nhất so với bất kỳ loài chim hoặc động vật hai chân nào khác và có thể chạy nước rút với tốc độ hơn 70km/giờ, trong một sải chân dài tới 5 m. Đà điểu là thành viên lớn nhất của phân lớp chuột ở Palaeognathae và là loài chim lớn nhất còn tồn tại trên thế giới. Do kích thước khổng lồ của chúng, thêm vào đó là đôi cánh nhỏ, yếu, nên chúng hoàn toàn không thể bay. .

Tuy nhiên, chúng vẫn sử dụng đôi cánh của mình để giữ thăng bằng khi chạy, cũng như để thể hiện sự tán tỉnh. Đà điểu hoang dã được tìm thấy ở Châu Phi. Ngoài ra, chúng cũng được nuôi tại các trang trại thương mại. Đà điểu thường nặng từ 139 đến 320 pounds và có thể cao tới 9 feet, 2 inch. 6. Chim cánh cụt

Có khả năng nín thở tới 20 phút, chúng có thể lặn xuống độ sâu 1.755 feet. Trong khi lặn, chúng săn tìm thức ăn bao gồm động vật giáp xác, nhuyễn thể, cá và mực.

7. Steamer Duck
