Các nhà hải dương học từ Mỹ và Anh phát hiện số lượng cá nhiều chưa từng thấy trong chuyến thám hiểm vùng biển Clarion Clipperton.

Vùng Clarion Clipperton (CCZ) nằm trên đường đứt gãy chính của Thái Bình Dương, trải dài khoảng 7240 km từ Hawaii đến Mexico. Những ngọn núi ngầm tại đây, có thể cao tới 3.000 m, là một trong những môi trường ít được khám phá nhất trên Trái Đất.

Trong một chuyến thám hiểm do Đại học Hawaii, Viện Nghiên cứu Thủy cung Vịnh Monterey của Mỹ và Trung tâm Hải dương học Quốc gia (NOC) của Anh phối hợp thực hiện, các nhà hải dương học đã báo cáo phát hiện số lượng cá nhiều chưa từng thấy tại vùng biển sâu thẳm này, gấp đôi kỷ lục được ghi nhận trước đó.

Sử dụng tàu lặn có người lái, nhóm nghiên cứu đã ghé thăm ba trong số các ngọn núi ngầm ở CCZ và vùng đáy biển bằng phẳng xung quanh chúng. Trong số những sinh vật được camera ghi lại, đáng chú ý có một đàn cá chình lên tới 115 con. Dựa vào một số mẫu vật bị mắc bẫy, các nhà khoa học đã có thể xác định chúng là Ilyophis arx, một loài cá chình mũi nhọn rất ít được biết tới với chưa đến 10 mẫu vật trong các bộ sưu tập cá trên toàn thế giới.
